Benkis Photography offers small-group photography workshops and personalized one-on-one mentoring for photographers who want more than a list of camera settings.

Mike Benkis has spent years teaching photographers in classrooms, camera clubs, and in the field, including approximately eight years teaching photography with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Instruction combines technical understanding with composition, field craft, lighting, editing, and the creative decisions that turn a technically correct photograph into a stronger image.

Whether you're learning the fundamentals or trying to push an established body of work further, instruction is adapted to the photographer rather than built around a one-size-fits-all formula.

Small-Group Workshops

Workshops are intentionally kept small so participants can receive meaningful individual attention instead of simply following a group through a location.

Topics vary throughout the year and may include wildlife, seasonal opportunities, creative camera techniques, portrait lighting, editing, artificial intelligence in photography, and other subjects where hands-on instruction can make a meaningful difference.

Most workshops emphasize learning in real situations: understanding changing light, making decisions quickly, recognizing behavior or visual opportunities, and adapting technique when conditions don't cooperate.

One-on-One Mentoring

Individual mentoring allows us to concentrate entirely on the areas that matter most to you.

Sessions can focus on camera operation, wildlife photography, composition, lighting, editing, portfolio development, creative direction, or the broader process of becoming a more intentional photographer.

Mentoring can also include image review and constructive critique designed to identify both what is already working and where the greatest opportunities for growth exist.

How We Teach

Understand the Why

Camera settings are useful, but simply copying someone else's settings doesn't teach you how to make the next photograph. Instruction focuses on understanding why a decision works so you can apply the same thinking when conditions change.

Individual Attention

Small groups and one-on-one instruction make it possible to work with photographers at different experience levels without forcing everyone through exactly the same lesson.

Technique Serves the Image

Technical skill matters, but the goal is not technical perfection for its own sake. Technique should give you the freedom to concentrate on light, timing, atmosphere, behavior, and the photograph you are trying to create.

Teaching & Speaking Experience

Mike's photography education experience includes approximately eight years teaching with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, photography workshops and mentoring, camera club leadership, and presentations for photography organizations and community groups.

Speaking engagements have included Professional Photographers of Nebraska, Rockbrook Camera Club, Heron Haven Camera Club, Fontenelle Forest Camera Club, Sioux City Camera Club, and the Council Bluffs Public Library.
